HOW TO SUBMIT SAMPLES

  • Ensure that samples are submitted preferably in an FAS box. If none are available to you then use any sealable clean container to avoid spillage.
    (Soil sample boxes are available from any SASRI Extension Office or the Laboratory)

  • Include at least 500g soil.

  • Containers must be filled to the top with the soil sample and sealed.

  • All leaf matter must be submitted in either a brown paper bag or in cardboard and clearly labelled.
  • Samples submitted in plastic will go mouldy due to moisture build-up, compromising results.
  • Preferably, air-dry leaf samples in a well-ventilated room before submitting to the laboratory.

(Leaf sample labels are available from any SASRI Extension Office or the Laboratory.

  • Fertiliser samples must be submitted in clean, tightly sealed sample bags or bottles (may be plastic) and clearly labelled.
  • Spillage onto other samples will result in sample contamination and incorrect analyses.

  • Water samples must be submitted in clean, tightly sealed sample bottles and clearly labelled.

    If you have a number of samples, these should be neatly packed in a cardboard box and clearly labelled.

SAMPLE LABELLING

Clearly label ALL sample containers with the Sample ID/Field number, Soil depth (if applicable) and your Contact details.

Ensure that the correct FAS submission form (Soil, Leaf, Fertiliser or Water) is filled in and attached to your box of samples. 

Ensure that the sample information on the submission form and sample packaging are the same.

Minimum information required on the sample package is your contact name, number and sample ID.

SAMPLE SUBMISSION FORMS

Minimum information required on the submission form, in order to process your samples efficiently include:

    • Contact name
    • contact number
    • postal address
    • email address is compulsory
    • VAT number (if available)

WHERE TO DROP OFF SAMPLES

Samples can be dropped off at our laboratory in Mount Edgecombe, Durban in person or at the sample bin outside our security gate. The samples can also be sent to our Laboratory via any courier service (at your cost).

However, there are a number of FREE sample drop off points in the sugarcane-growing regions. These include SASRI Extension offices. 

We do not encourage the use of the Post Office as there is a significant risk that the samples will be lost or damaged.
